Earth Friend Gen

At the beginning of th 90's, the fifth Generation (Gen 5) Celica replaced Fourth Generation (Gen 4). The Gen 5 developed and expanded on the mechanical strengths of the Gen 4 although it left behind the angular shape of the Gen 4 and sported a more rounded body shape. As with the Gen 4, the Gen 5 was, as standard, a Front Wheel drive car, but there was a significant development in the shape of the Four Wheel Drive Turbo version - the mighty GT4, also known as the ST185.

The Gen 5 was, once again, fitted with the bulletproof, bombproof 3S-GE engine that could belt out around one hundred and seventy brake horse power.

The ST185 was fitted with an beefed up, turbocharged version of the 3S-GTE engine which produced in the stock condition about 200bhp. With the equivalent power output of around 100bhp per litre, the car's 0-60 time, although pretty good, was not as impressive as it should have been due to the car's considerable weight. On the up side though, the car's handling characteristics were absolutely brillianr due to the strong chassis and the excellent four wheel drive system.

Later models of the ST185 were enhanced further with the fitting of a Water to Air Intercooler (on the special edition RC and CS models). This innovation was to be carried over to the new ST205 (Generation 6 Celica) GT4s which replaced the Gen5 Celica in 1994. The Carlos Sainz (CS) and its Japanese Domestic Market equivalent the RC were also fitted with limited slip differentials (LSDs).
