High School Science Projects

Here is a high school science fair project experiment and is an interesting demonstration for the fair.

Material and items needed for this project include:

  • An egg

  • A tea light candle

  • A match

  • A bowl

  • Water

Fill the bowl with water. You will want to put enough water in the bowl so that when you drop the egg into the water it completely covers the egg. The liquid should even be an inch or two over the egg. You may also want to use a clear bowl so that you can also see the egg from the sides and not just the top.

Using the match light the tea light. Hold the egg over the candle and allow the black carbon emitted from the flame to turn the outer shell of the egg black. You will need to rotate the egg as the black coating surrounds the shell so that it becomes completely covered in black soot. You will have to put the egg right on top of the flame to do this. Be careful because you do not want to burn your fingers doing this part of the project. You may need a parent to help with this part of the project to avoid injuries or burns.

At one point you will have to touch and hold the egg on the black portion to get the ends colored as well. Try not to rub off the black because you need this on the shell. When the egg is completely covered in black carbon gently place it into the water. Now view it through the water. Can you see inside the egg? Does it look like you are seeing the yolk? Is this the inside of the egg or an illusion?

Do your research to determine why you see this. If you remove the egg from the water nothing has happened to the shell. This is an interesting science project and can be cone by middle school students as well.
